Program:
Techniques for quantifying multiple gene expression levels, and by
comparison differential gene expression, are proving to be very useful for
highlighting genes that may be of particular interest as pharmaceutical
targets. Comparisons of expression patterns between normal and diseased
tissue can help identify mechanisms of pathophysiology, as well as
differentiate between selective and nonselective targets. The advantages of
different techniques, such as chips, microarrays, sequencing, F and
tag-sequencing will all be presented, as well as a number of specific
examples of how this approach is being used. Techniques focusing on
functional or phenotype assessment, designed such that the responsible
genes can be readily identified, offer an alternative approach that also shows
great promise.
